ACES visualizations

Zoom-in from Planck + HI4PI to ATLASGAL to Bolocam+VLA+Spitzer

We start from an all-sky image of gas in the Milky Way Galaxy. The gas shown is a mix of neutral hydrogen (blue), carbon monoxide (red), and dust (green).
The data at the start come from the Planck satellite's all-sky images and the HI4PI survey, which used several ground-based radio telescopes.
We zoom in toward the Galactic center, and partway in, higher-resolution data from the ATLASGAL survey, taken at the APEX telescope in the Atacama desert, appear.
Finally, we end with this picture of the Galactic Center. It shows dust, where new stars will form, in orange, hot ionized plasma in purple, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in green. These come from the (now-defunct) Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on Mauna Kea, the Very Large Array, and the Spitzer Space Telescope, respectively.
